Northern pike – (Esox lucius) is a large predatory fish, widespread in our waters. It reaches over 150 cm body length and a weight up to 20 kg. Females are usually much larger than males of the same age. The pike is a common predator. It is not uncommon for cannibalism to develop when larger specimens feed on smaller ones. Its ration of food also includes frogs, mice and waterfowl chicks. Unlike other predators, the pike sticks to some places in the pond and attacks its prey from an ambush, returning to its position after the attack. Chasing the victim is not a job for the pike. Of particularity is the way it catches the fish it eats – usually, the initial grip is across the body, after which it takes its head first. This fact is a consequence of the specific structure of the jaws and teeth of the pike, which are not intended for chewing – the pike swallows its prey whole.
