In the municipality of Botevgrad there are 1 maintained reserve, 6 protected areas and 2 natural landmarks:
- The maintained reserve “School Forest” is located in the village of Bozhenitsa. It is declared with the purpose of natural oak forests conservation. A total of 62 bird species can be observed in the nesting period on the territory of the reserve, including: white and black storks, European honey buzzard, Northern goshawk, common buzzard, common kestrel, Eurasian hobby and peregrine falcon, common quail, common wood pigeon, Eurasian collared dove, common cuckoo, several species of owls, European nightjar, Eurasian hoopoe, European bee-eater, several species of Piciformes, and a wide variety of birds of the class Passeriformes.
- The protected areas are:
“Dreneto” is located in the village of Litakovo. It is created with the purpose of natural meadows and oak forests conservation. The area is also of an ornithological interest since there are regularly about 28 nests of herons and about 14 of storks. On its territory, there are 11 old oak trees, about 500-years old. On the tops of the oaks the nests of the storks are located, and on the lower branches are the nests of the herons. When the terrain was declared as a protected area, the most part of it has been marshy. Nowadays, due to the climate change, the area is getting dry, which is a precondition for birds to move to other more favourable territories.
The “Muhalnitsa” or “The Frog Swamp”, as it is known to the local people, is located in the land of Botevgrad in the villa zone of Zelin. It is declared with the purpose of the swamp and its adjacent territories conservation, and it is known worldwide with the unique migration of the common frog (Rana temporaria). Every year, the common frogs go down from the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains’ part „Bilo“ along the three rivers – Echemishka, Chervena kiselitsa and Zelinska. At the end of winter and early spring, passing through the distance of 7 km, they appear into “The Frog Swamp”, where they spawn. When the little frogs grow up enough, they leave the swamp and head to the valley of the rivers to the mountain, where they wait for the next melting of the snow.
“Urvich” – in the land of the village of Bozhenitsa, near the Bozhenishki Urvich fortress. It was established as a forest park and declared with the purpose of oak forests conservation. A group of centuries-old trees are preserved on its area.
“The Rudina” – in the land of the town of Botevgrad, where ancient beech forests are preserved.
“Romania” has been declared with the purpose of the conservation of an area with a typical landscape, a result from the harmonious cohabitation of man and nature in the land of the village of Rashkovo.
“High Mound” – in the lands of the village of Bozhenitza and the village of Skravena on the territory of the municipality of Botevgrad, as well as the village of Kalugerovo, the village of Praveshka Lakavitsa in the municipality of Pravets. Initially, it was a buffer zone of a maintained “School Forest” reserve; later it was categorized as a protected area, preserving its scope, boundaries and regimes.
- Natural landmarks:
“Elaka” – declared with the purpose of ancient beech forests and rock formations conservation. It is located in the land of the village of Vrachesh.
“The Water Furnace” – declared with the purpose of bats and specific cave formations conservation. It is located in the land of the village of Lipnitsa.
Without the status of a natural landmark, but attractive enough are the Bears’ holes (rocks) in the area of the village of Novachene.
